Letter to Floyd County from BRTA President: Congratulations!
In response to:
Ladies and Gentlemen:
As the newly elected President of Blue Ridge Travel Association, CONGRATULATIONS to the Community of Floyd, the winner of the 2009 Tourism Community of the Year award.
Floyd has taken what is real and what is unique about our Appalachian heritage to emerge from “The Road Less Travelled, to one of America’s Dozen Distinguished Destinations (as Virginia’s Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail has been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation)! Floyd is a community where the past is appreciated and the future is embraced.
It has an abundance of natural beauty, historic sites, fantastic art and traditional music. It is through creative thinking, strategic planning and cooperative marketing that the tourism industry in Floyd has generated almost $18 million in 2008, an increase of 6.4% over the previous year. This community has taken advantage of regional opportunities and partnerships such as The Crooked Road and ‘Round the Mountain. Equally important are, the steps you’re taking today to reflect and take inventory of your assets and resources.
As you plan for the future, Blue Ridge Travel Association offers our 20+ years of marketing experience to assist your tourism attractions, lodging establishments, retail shops and outdoor recreation outfitters, restaurants, tourism office, chamber of commerce, and town and county government in promoting your tourism assets to the world. Through co-operative advertising, over 50,000 LEADS were received and processed last year, sending travel guides to folks interested in travel to Western Virginia.
All Southwest Virginia communities can learn from Floyd. I applaud your accomplishments! One last note…….. Please be sure to go online and vote for the Crooked Road as one of America’s Dozen Distinguished Destinations by going to www.preservationnation.org .
On behalf of the Blue Ridge Travel Association, Congratulations Floyd!
Sincerely,
Margie Bandy Douglass, President Blue Ridge Travel Association
